Whitewater rafting was something that we had wanted to try for a long time, and we finally decided to go for it. We chose a guided trip with Ace Adventure Resort located in Minden, WV. This is truly an adventure resort. They have many activities including climbing/rappelling, horseback riding, mountain biking, zip lines, kayaking, atv tours, fishing trips, etc, as well as a huge campground and cabins. We had to drive 4.5 hours to get here, so we decided on camping a couple of nights while we were here. This was late in the summer, and school had already started and family vacations were almost over, so we pretty much had the campground to ourselves.

We wanted one of the guided trips that was recommended for beginners, so we chose the Upper New River which has Class 1-3+ rapids. That was tough enough for our first trip out, especially since we chose to use one man inflatable duckies as our mode of transportation. We could have opted to ride in the 16' raft with a guide and a bunch of other people, but that didn't sound like the kind of fun we were searching for.

After gearing up with helmets, paddles, and life vests, we had some quick lessons on how to maneuver the ducky. It wasn't that hard, but of course we were training in very calm waters. The guides got all of the gear loaded and strapped into the large raft and off we went. We let the large raft lead and we all followed behind in the duckies. Before we would approach rapids, we would pull off to the side and the guide would explain the best route, what to do, what not to do, and what to look out for. The Class 1 and 2 rapids were very easy, but the Class 3 will get any novice rafter's heart pumping!

This was an all day trip with many rapids, a lot of swimming and photo opportunities, a nice hot lunch cooked over a fire, and even an exhilarating jump from "Jump Rock". This was approximately a 20 foot jump into the water. Almost all of the kids in our tour jumped, but we were the only adults who would take the plunge! That was sooooooo much fun!

Although there are many rafting/adventure companies in the area, Ace Adventure Resort was top notch. The campground and facilities were great and the guides were awesome. The only bad thing about the entire trip was the long bumpy bus ride to the drop in point. We hope to return some day and try some other adventures.
