Kennerdell Tract - Clear Creek State Forest

TYPE - Backpack (one night)

This trail system is fairly close to home, so we headed north to the Clear Creek State Forest. We have day hiked the Kennerdell Tract before, but we have not backpacked here yet. We just wanted to take it easy this trip, so we just did a short 6 mile loop utilizing many trails. We parked at the Kennerdell Bridge trailhead and the immediately started to climb the Kennerdell Trail. The rest our loop consisted of the Overlook Trail, Dennison Point, Dennison Run Trail, Iron Furnace trail, South Trail, and back on the Kennerdell Trail downhill to the trailhead.

After enjoying the views of the Allegheny River from Dennsion Point Overlook, we hiked on with the purpose of finding a place to camp along the Dennsion Run Trail. The following day our next point of interest was the Bullion Run Iron Furnace. This is located on a short out and back trail. Although the furnace was interesting in its own right, what really caught our eye was the porcupine who had taken up residence in the rafters of the iron furnace kiosk. He's been there awhile too….a lot of poop and a lot of damage to the wood and roof from him munching on it! Even the shingles and aluminum drip edge had been eaten!

This is a nice area to hike in, but be prepared for a lot of day hikers if it is nice weather. Also, the trails that we hiked on were hiking only trails, but some of the trails in the northern section of the tract is also mountain bike trails. These trails are somewhat popular to bikers, so be aware.
