Bear Run Nature Reserve

11/30/2013

TRAIL DISTANCE - 8 miles

TYPE - Day Hike

The Bear Run Nature Reserve is located in the Laurel Highlands of southwestern Pennsylvania. It is a nice trail system with designated primitive campsites. With a total of 20 miles of trails, you could easily spend a couple of days backpacking in this area utilizing many different loop options. Or you can do like we did today and day hike a smaller loop.

We pulled up to the trailhead parking lot on this cold November day with no cars in sight. It looks like we may have the trails to ourselves today. There was some light snow on the ground, but it was the cold that we wanted to be prepared for. Mike wore his larger day pack and had a lot of warm clothes and hot food for us for when we stopped to take a lunch break.

This was a peaceful day hike for us today. This is a moderately rated hike typically, but there were quite a few blowdowns that we had to negotiate today which made the trek a little more difficult. And a lot more fun! Who doesn't like to climb around on trees?
